Fad diets are intended to help people lose a great deal of weight in a short period of time – they’re popular because they appear to be miracles. They are usually sold by a series of wild claims, much like the old pitch men pitched in the traveling medicine shows.

The cookie diet came about as the result of research into natural foods done for a book in 1975. This cookie diet consisted of patients eating six cookies each day in place of meals, then eating a reasonable dinner. There were about 500 calories combined in the cookies, and the dinner could be 300 calories in the evening. Very quickly the cookie diet became a huge success, with 14 clinics in Florida and 10 in Latin America expounding this amazing weight loss formula. It wasn’t long before over 200 doctors were regularly recommending the cookie diet. It was at this time that shakes and soups were added to the mix, these also containing the amino acids that control hunger.

Later Hollywood grabbed the cookie diet. The diet benefited from the media efforts of all the stars who tried it to lose weight.  This diet is similar to the original in that it consists of a cookie for breakfast, a cookie as a snack in the morning, a cookie for lunch, a cookie as a mid-afternoon snack, and then a reasonable dinner.  Each cookie contains approximately 150 calories, loaded with fiber, protein and 13 vitamins and minerals.

Don’t waste time with the cookie diet. Remember that good health comes from a balanced diet and an exercise program.  In general this is a much healthier way to lose or maintain weight than relying on some fly by night miracle food, even if it is endorsed by someone you recognize from a movie.

Nobody knows who created the cabbage soup diet. It first appeared in the early 1980s, faxed from person to person like a chain letter. To gain acceptance the diet often used well-respected names, calling itself things like the Children’s Hospital diet. Any suggested relationship to these institutions is false. 

The cabbage soup diet calls for drinking nothing but water or unsweetened fruit juice on days when juice is allowed.  A general outline of the diet is something like this|Here’s how the diet works.

Day one — cabbage soup and any fruit except bananas.

Day two — cabbage soup plus vegetables, which could include a half baked potato with no butter.

Day three — add vegetables and fruit to the daily cabbage soup, but no bananas or potato.

Day six — cabbage soup and as much of beef and vegetables as you can eat, no potatoes.

Day seven — {cabbage soup, brown rice, vegetables, unsweetened fruit juice, but no potatoes|Along with cabbage soup eat brown rice, vegetables and unsweetened fruit juice – no potatoes|unsweetened fruit juice, vegetables except potatoes, brown rice, and of course our friend cabbage soup}.

According to the cabbage soup diet you could lose 10 pounds in just a week.  While it may be possible, most of that weight will be water weight. Nutritionists agree that it’s just not possible to lose 10 pounds of fat in only one week. It is however, possible to get sick from a lack of nutrition which is one danger with the cabbage soup diet.

In addition the cabbage soup diet isn’t easy. In general this isn’t because it’s difficult to understand but rather because cabbage soup isn’t a lot of fun. It was common for people to last only a couple of days before quitting. There was even an attempt to spice up the cabbage soup diet with new recipes, but that failed.

You don’t have to turn to something goofy like the cabbage soup diet for weight loss. Exercise more and cut out calories in order to accomplish a goal.

Atkins Diet Plan

Many people have heard of the Atkins diet, the short name for Atkins nutritional approach.  It was the brainchild of the doctor named Robert Atkins.  He had gained a lot of weight in medical school.  A medical Journal had an article about a diet.  He decided to improve it and release it under his name.

Dr. Atkins came up with new ideas, his Atkins diet, about the nature of weight gain.  First, he dismissed the idea that saturated fats were bad.  The carbohydrates are the culprits.  In Atkins theory eating too little fat make things even worse.  Carbohydrates are used to make up for the lack of fat in low fat foods.  That meant people on a diet often ate foods that were worse than they normally ate. 

This all changes in the Atkins diet.  Once Carbohydrates were removed from a diet, people would burn more stored body fat.  Once the fat was burned, the pounds will follow.  The goal wasn’t necessarily to take in fewer calories.  Dr. Atkins held that your diet could actually help you burn calories.  In fact Atkins cited a study that claimed the body would burn an extra 950 calories on his diet.  But the claims were not true.

In addition to claims of weight loss, Dr. Atkins said his Atkins diet could help people with type 2 diabetes.  Being overweight is generally considered the major cause for type 2 diabetes.  Therefore, by means of losing weight a person on the Atkins diet would be addressing their type 2 diabetes.  In addition the Atkins diet also addresses the measure of taking in fewer carbohydrates which is part of managing type 2 diabetes, so that Dr. Atkins suggested people on his diet would no longer need to monitor their blood sugar or take insulin.  The medical world, in general, disagrees with Atkins on this point.  They agree lower carbohydrates help with type 2 diabetes, but there is no proof that carbohydrates cause the disease.

What steps does one take to follow the Atkins diet?  Induction, ongoing weight loss, pre-maintenance and lifetime maintenance are the four necessary phases of the diet.  Here is an overview of the most important phase – Induction.

The Induction phase is the most difficult phase of the Atkins diet.  This phase should be followed for a period of two weeks.  Carbohydrates are nearly removed entirely from the diet, only 15-20 grams can be consumed each day.  The result of this phase should be ketosis, a metabolic reaction by which the body converts stored fat into fatty acids, generally prompted by a lack of glucose.  Weight loss of 20 pounds over this period isn’t uncommon – that’s a staggering amount.

Learning the ideal carbohydrate levels for weight losing and for day to day intake after the weight loss ends are the purposes of the final three phases in the Atkins diet.  Dr. Atkins himself died of complications of increased fat intake in his diet, which is something to keep in mind when choosing this diet.
