Excellent Diet Tips You Can Try After Your Lap Band Surgery
Posted by: HealthyGirl / Category: Weight LossMaking that decision for bariatric surgery is not easy for anyone. Lap Band surgery is generally the result of years dealing with obesity and failed attempts at losing weight. Unbeknown to many, this surgery is just the start of a long journey. There are going to be a lot of changes like a strict diet that will have to be enforced after surgery. For many, that would be even more difficult than going through the procedure itself. To help you with your post-surgery trauma, here are a few excellent diet tips for you to start with. Be warned that some may be difficult, but the results will speak for themselves.
* Avoid liquids during or soon after a meal: This may sound hard to do, but it is very important. Liquids can fill you quickly, or wash food through much too quickly, making you feel hungry longer.
* Water intake: It is advisable for everyone to drink eight glasses of water daily. This is even more important if you had bariatric surgery.
* Establish a consistent meal routine: After having bariatric surgery, make it a point to eat your meals at a set time. Even if you are not feeling hungry yet, you can still eat as much as you can because skipping meals will decrease your metabolism rate and prevent you from getting essential nutrients. Avoid eating your lunch at 12pm one day and have it at 3pm the next because you had to run an errand. Doing this may even cause you to over eat on your next meal. After having lap band surgery, the most important meal that must be taken on a daily basis is breakfast, which should be eaten within two hours or sooner after waking up.
* Check labels: After having bariatric surgery, you will need to take a look at everything you eat or drink and avoid anything with excess amounts of calories or fat. Things like alcohol, ice cream, soda and milkshakes are to be avoided. These items pass through quickly, and you may still feel hungry. In many cases, foods and beverages that are high in calories will result in quick weight gain or diarrhea.
* Prioritize your nutrition: Stick to high quality and nutritious foods after your lap band procedure. This way, you will keep your body healthy by still getting enough minerals, nutrients and vitamins even after your surgery.
* Avoid caffeine: Steer clear from coffee, tea or soda. In fact, any food that contains caffeine should be avoided post lap band surgery. Take note that even food or drinks that are labeled as decaffeinated still contain caffeine, which prevents your body from efficiently absorbing iron, as well as trigger your hunger and possibly lead to complicated recovery from bariatric surgery.
These diet tips are easier said than done. You might slip up on one or two of these tips, and if that is so, then you need to do something to think about other things than food.
* Take a drive or a walk
* Take a shower or bath
* Call a friend or family member
* Start writing about your experiences and emotions in your diary, if you’ve got one
* Visit an online message board or sign up for an area support group
* Start a new hobby or begin exercising
* Visit a theater or watch a movie
If you have to, turn off the TV and just sit there and relax. Having the lap band procedure was the hard part; the rest just takes a little work and patience.
