Don’t stop eating your favourite foods, just reduce your intake or treat them as a reward when you’ve been good. Set yourself a target weight loss before you allow yourself a fatty burger. Make it a treat if you have been good with your dieting efforts for a while. Going without those favourite treats tends to backfire and makes you give up on your weight loss plan easily.

Don’t think of fatty foods as the enemy. Your body needs fats to work well, it is your overall intake of calories that matters most and then the balance of food groups within the intake. Good carbohydrates like wholemeal foods, protein, fruit and vegetables are all essential.

Don’t go mad on exercise. Strange as it may seem this is not a good idea. Taking to exercise while unfit can cause all sorts of problems including injuries and appetite problems. The injuries will only put you off further exercise. The appetite problem comes about because your body suddenly sees a need for more calories than usual so makes you feel hungry.

Don’t go on a crash diet. Crash diets are inevitably unsuccessful as the weight lost is largely just water weight rather than fat. Crash dieting has a negaive effect on your body, it thinks you’re starving so slows down its metabolic rate making it difficult to lose weight. There is also a problem in that when you return to a normal eating pattern, your body tries to store that energy as fat in case of another lean time.

Don’t give up. Your weight loss will plateau occassionally and you will lose your way from time to time too. Just start where you left off, being consistent is the key to permanent weight loss.
